Jean Marie LEROUX (Paris 1788 -?) "La Vierge du Musée de Parme" (Our Lady of the Staircase) Original etching and dotted manner signed and dated in the lower right plate "JMLeroux St 1837 from a subject by Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (Correggio 1489ca - March 1534), published in Paris by the publishers Veith & Hauser Boulevard des Italiens, whose stamp is printed in the center under the literal part. Nice copy printed on heavy paper, complete with the imprint of the plate and with small margins, with a tiny restoration on the upper left corner and some traces of old gluing that cause light spots on the front and more marked on the back but overall excellent general state of conservation. Uncommon. Beraldi reports the date 1838 (?) For this print. The fresco was probably commissioned to Correggio by the civic community of Parma to decorate the Porta San Michele and was executed between 1522 and 1523, was inserted in 1555 inside the Oratory of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from where it was detached because of the Napoleonic demolitions of 1812 and brought to the Academy and Fine Arts and then to the National Gallery where in 1948 he was transferred to canvas. Bibliography: Beraldi "Les Graveurs du XIX siecle" Paris 1889 vol.4 pag. 152 No. 10. Nicoletta Moretti in Fornari Schianchi "Correggio" Milan 2008 pages 265 and 309.
